THE 25th ALTERNATIVE HAIR SHOW 2007:
ELEMENTS

The 25th Alternative Hair Show was held at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 14th October. Always a highlight to the Salon International weekend, the magnificent venue was absolutely rocking –with an audience of 5,500 - who were there to celebrate this enduring charity’s ‘silver anniversary.’
The main purpose of the evening is, of course, to raise money for Leukaemia Research. Tony Rizzo the founder of the event; reminded the audience of the real help that their generosity has achieved over the years, assisting him in raising over £6million - and most importantly - helping to improve the survival rates for childhood Leukaemia from just 20% to over 80%. (Tony’s challenge is now those 20% who sadly do not survive and also to focus on adult blood cancers, which have a much lower survival rate.) These facts were emphasised too, by Honorary President Joshua Galvin and Alternative Hair International Patron, Vidal Sassoon, who together launched the 2007 Appeal at the beginning of the second half of the show.
Before the show began, the audience was entertained by U.S. rock band ‘Drive A’ –all the way from L.A.- who played 2 numbers from their latest album. The band is headed up by Bruno Mascolo Jnr, the 15 year old son of TIGI’s CEO Bruno Mascolo.
During the evening, Anthony Mascolo, Alternative Hair’s International President, was presented with 2 awards: – the ‘Alternative Hair Most Influential Hairdresser’ was awarded to him by Jayne Lewis-Orr Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Hairdressers Journal. The Award recognises the influence he has had over the last 25 years on both hairdressing and on a generation of hairdressers and for his iconic status within the industry. He was also presented with an award by Leukaemia Research for his involvement with Alternative Hair and for his generosity in supporting the charity since taking up the role of President 4 years ago.
Also recognised during the evening was Renato Brunas. Renato was the innovator behind avant-garde hair shows (as well as the man who invented Crazy Colour.) As the instigator of global creative hair events, many of the teams appearing at the 25th Alternative Hair Show began their show careers with Renato’s Oro Theatre in the 1970’s. Renato Brunas also very generously began the 2007 Appeal with a donation of $50,000.
Other personal donations came from Tommy’s Hair Company of Ruthin, S. Wales (who made a donation of £1874.38.) and Carlton Laundry, Bounds Green, North London, (who made a donation of £500.00,) which helped raise a staggering amount of £260,000.00 on the evening of the Show.
The 25 top hairdressing teams who appeared during the evening showed amazing creativity and variation. The very best global hairdressing teams demonstrated a total unity - in their focus to make the evening a success and must be applauded for their absolute creativity in their interpretation of The Elements - under the headings; Earth, Air, Fire and Spirit. Their presentations encompassed both avant-garde ideas and also street-fashion and couture hair, giving a new slant to the show.
All the teams appear at their own expense or are individually sponsored, ensuring all profits from ticket sales go directly to Leukaemia Research.
The show was sponsored by TIGI Bed Head and is also sponsored, very generously, by the UK and international trade press, who provide advertising and editorial coverage before and after the event.
All the beautiful awards presented during the evening were designed and created by Weil and Ell Esser.
